"How old am I?" sounds like it should have a boring, one-word answer, but it depends entirely on when you ask and how precise you want the answer to be. Right now, at this moment, you are a specific number of years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds old. The calculator above will spit out every version of that number the instant you type in your date of birth.
Here's the fun part: your age changes every second. Not in a philosophical way — in a literal one. If you refresh this page in five minutes, the "total minutes" number will have gone up by five. Most people never think about their age this granularly because we round to the nearest year, but the rounded version hides a lot. Someone who says they're 34 might be a week away from 35, or they might have just turned 34 yesterday. Those are two very different 34s.
The way we calculate exact age isn't just "this year minus that year." If your birthday is on November 3rd and it's currently October 1st, subtracting years alone would overshoot by more than a month. So the correct method walks year-by-year, then month-by-month, then day-by-day, borrowing from the next unit up when a subtraction goes negative — the same way you did long subtraction in third grade. The tool above handles all of that in the background.
A few things worth knowing while you use it. The result is chronological age — how long you've been alive on the calendar. It doesn't tell you your biological age (how well your cells are holding up), your psychological age (how you feel), or your Korean age (which uses a completely different counting system — see the guide). It also doesn't adjust for time zones, so if you were born on the international date line at 11:59 PM, congratulations, this calculator will get within a day of the truth but might disagree with your birth certificate about which day.
For most uses — filling out a form, telling a story at a party, calculating your age on a specific past date for a school application — this is exactly the tool you want. The calculator walks from your date of birth to today: it counts complete years first, then remaining complete months, then remaining days. This gives you the standard 'X years, Y months, Z days' format rather than an approximation. Under the hood it also computes the total elapsed time in every unit — hours, minutes, seconds — from the millisecond difference between the two dates.
Two common reasons. First, your ID probably shows only the year (e.g., '34'), which is a rounded number that ignores the current month. Second, some IDs use a birthdate written in a format that got misread when it was entered — check the year on your document if the calculator disagrees by a lot.
Yes, correctly. The underlying JavaScript Date object handles leap years automatically, including the every-400-years exception (2000 was a leap year; 1900 wasn't). If you were born on February 29th, the calculator uses March 1st as the effective birthday in non-leap years — which is the convention most countries follow legally.
Absolutely. The 'age as of' input accepts any date — past, present, or future. Enter your DoB and set the second date to, say, 2050-01-01, and you'll see how old you'll be on that day. It's a strangely humbling exercise.
Accurate to the day, yes. Accurate to the second, only if you specify a time of birth (which most people don't, and this tool doesn't ask for). If you want second-level precision, you'd need to know the exact moment you were born, which — unless your parents were unusually detailed record-keepers — you probably don't.
