There's something about a birthday countdown that never quite stops working. Even when you get to the age where you'd rather forget you have birthdays at all, there's still a small, honest part of you that wants to know the exact number of days between today and the next one. The tool above will give you that — down to the minute.

The math is simple: take today's date, find the next occurrence of your birthday in the calendar (this year if it hasn't happened yet, next year if it has), and count the milliseconds in between. Divide that by the number of milliseconds in a day, an hour, and a minute, and you get a live countdown. Refresh the page tomorrow and the number will have gone down by one.

The bit people usually don't know: which day of the week their birthday falls on this year. Everyone knows their birthday, but the weekday it lands on shifts by one day each year (two after a leap year). If your birthday was on a Wednesday in 2024, it'll be a Thursday in 2025, then a Saturday in 2026 (because 2028 skips one due to leap year mechanics). The tool works it out for you and displays the weekday alongside the countdown.

Why does this matter? Party planning, mostly. A birthday that lands on a Saturday is a very different affair than one on a Tuesday. Kids and teenagers care intensely; adults pretend not to but actually still do. The tool shows the weekday for both this year's birthday and (if you set the reference date forward) any future year.

One edge case: February 29th birthdays. If you were born on a leap day, most systems treat March 1st as your effective birthday in non-leap years. The tool follows the same convention, so the countdown will target March 1st in years 2025, 2026, 2027 — then back to February 29th in 2028. This is what most countries do legally, though a few (notably New Zealand and some US states) treat February 28th as the effective day instead.

Want your exact age at the same time? The main age calculator shows both. Want to know how many days you've lived in total? That's the age-in-days page.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until my next birthday?

It depends on your date of birth and today's date. Enter your DoB above and the tool will tell you in real time. On average, a birthday countdown will show somewhere between 1 and 365 days — but the exact number is only meaningful for a specific person on a specific day.

Why does my birthday weekday change each year?

Because 365 days isn't cleanly divisible by 7. A common year is 52 weeks plus one extra day, so each birthday shifts by one weekday. A leap year has 52 weeks plus two extra days, so it shifts by two. That's why your birthday cycles through the whole week roughly every 5-6 years, then repeats.

What if my birthday is February 29th?

In non-leap years, the calculator uses March 1st as your effective birthday for the countdown, which is the most common legal convention worldwide. If you specifically want the countdown to target February 28th instead (used by New Zealand law), you'd have to enter that date manually.

Can I count down to a birthday other than mine?

Absolutely. Enter any date of birth — a friend, a family member, a favorite celebrity. The tool works the same way regardless of whose birthday it is. Just don't send them a screenshot; nobody wants to be told they have 47 days to go.

Does the countdown update in real time?

It updates every time you load the page. If you leave the page open, it doesn't tick down live — but a refresh will show the updated number. For a truly live ticker you'd need a live JavaScript timer, which we skipped to keep the page fast and lightweight.
