How Old Am I, Really? A Playful Guide to Every Way to Count Your Age
The math, the fun bits, the birthday paradox, and why the Koreans used to make everyone one year older on New Year's Eve.
A friend of mine spent about six weeks last year insisting he was 34 years old. Turns out he was still 33 — his birthday was in July and it was only May. He'd been rounding up his whole life, and nobody had ever called him on it. When I finally pointed it out he laughed, then squinted at his driver's license like it had personally betrayed him. "Huh," he said. That was it. Thirty-three for another six weeks, then 34 for real.
I bring this up because "how old am I" feels like the most trivial question you could ask. It isn't. It's a question with at least four honest answers, depending on which system you're using and how precise you want to be. This is a piece about all of them — the math, the fun bits, the birthday paradox, and why the Koreans used to make everyone one year older on New Year's Eve for no reason.

Why 'how old am I' is a weirder question than it sounds
The number we call "age" is doing at least three jobs at once. It's a measurement of elapsed time (how long since you were born). It's a legal category (old enough to vote, drive, drink, retire). It's a social signal (young enough to still be figuring it out, old enough to have opinions about music). None of these three necessarily agree, and the number we throw around casually is a bad summary of all three at once.
When you ask a doctor how old someone is, they want years and months — a five-year-old and a five-year-and-eleven-month-old are meaningfully different in a growth chart. When you ask an insurance company, they want your age in whole years as of your last birthday. When you ask a novelist, they want the version that fits the character. When you ask yourself, you probably want the round number, unless you're about to turn 30 or 40 or 50, in which case suddenly the months count.

The math: how age is actually calculated (and why it's not just this year minus that year)
Here's the mistake I see most often: people compute their age by subtracting the birth year from the current year. If it's 2026 and you were born in 1992, you must be 34, right?
Wrong, if you haven't had your birthday yet. If your birthday is in November and we're currently in March, you're still 33 for another eight months. Subtracting years alone assumes your birthday has already happened this year, which is only true after your birthday, which is a circular thing to check.
The correct method walks year-by-year, then month-by-month, then day-by-day. You start with the years difference, then subtract if the current month hasn't reached your birth month yet. Then you subtract if the current day hasn't reached your birth day yet. It's the same borrowing you did in third-grade subtraction, except with months instead of tens.
Under the hood, our calculator does exactly this. It computes a difference in years, months, and days, borrowing from the previous unit when needed. This is why the result comes out as "33 years, 8 months, 12 days" and not some floating-point mess like "33.68972 years." Age is a decimal that lies. Years-months-days is the honest version.
Age in different units — years, months, days, weeks, seconds
Once you know how many milliseconds have passed since you were born, you can divide by whatever unit you like. Total seconds is a big number — a 30-year-old is about 946 million seconds old. Total minutes is roughly 15.8 million. Total hours is 263,000-ish. Total days is 10,957 or so. Total weeks: 1,565.
The weeks number is the one that hits hardest for me. Tim Urban wrote an essay called "Your Life in Weeks" that showed a full human life as a grid of about 4,680 boxes. Seeing your age on that grid — filling in one box a week, watching them accumulate — makes time feel a lot more concrete than a floating years number ever did. A 30-year-old has used a third of the grid. A 60-year-old, two thirds. The remaining boxes are always fewer than you'd expect.
The heartbeats estimate is fun in a different way. Average resting heart rate is around 72 beats per minute. Multiply that by the number of minutes you've been alive and you get a rough estimate of the number of heartbeats you've racked up. A 40-year-old is somewhere north of 1.5 billion. Rats live for about 800 million heartbeats. Blue whales live for about the same. Almost every mammal, it turns out, gets roughly a billion heartbeats. Humans get two-plus, which either says something poetic about our species or is just a coincidence of size.

Chronological age vs. biological age vs. psychological age
Chronological age is the boring one — the number this calculator gives you, the number that goes on your ID. It's just calendar arithmetic.
Biological age is a much newer concept. Researchers try to estimate how well your body has actually aged using markers like telomere length (the caps on your chromosomes that shorten with each cell division), DNA methylation patterns (the "epigenetic clock" developed by Steve Horvath), grip strength, VO2max, and lipid profiles. A 40-year-old marathon runner might have a biological age of 30. A 40-year-old who smokes and drinks heavily might have a biological age of 55.
Psychological age is even squishier. It's how old you feel — whether you identify with your peers, whether you feel behind or ahead of your chronological cohort, whether you still think of yourself as "young." Most adults consistently report a psychological age about 20% younger than their chronological age. A 50-year-old feels roughly 40. This gap widens with age and doesn't predict much about health, but it's a real and consistent finding.
Then there's functional age, which is closer to biological but focuses on what your body can do rather than what its cells look like. Can you get up off the floor without using your hands? Can you carry your body weight for a mile? Can you balance on one foot for 30 seconds? These predict mortality better than any single number the calendar produces.
Zodiac signs, birthstones, and the fun stuff
None of the stuff in this section is science. All of it is fun. Your birthday puts you in a Western zodiac sign (based on the sun's position in the ecliptic when you were born, roughly), a Chinese zodiac sign (based on your birth year in a 12-year cycle), and a birthstone (based on the calendar month you were born in). Our calculator tells you all three.
Western zodiac: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, and so on. Twelve signs, one per month-ish, with cutoffs that don't quite align with month boundaries. A Capricorn born on December 30th and a Capricorn born on January 15th are in the same sign despite being weeks apart. There's no astronomy behind the modern boundaries — the actual constellations have shifted since the system was invented in Babylon around 500 BCE — but the sign names have stuck around.
Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. One per year, cycling every 12. The origin story involves a heavenly race and a cat who got tricked, which is why cats aren't in the zodiac. There are competing origin myths in Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian traditions where the cat replaces the rabbit. If you were born in the year of the Dragon (1988, 2000, 2012, 2024), you're statistically part of a bigger birth cohort — Dragon years cause spikes in birth rates because parents in some countries prefer Dragon babies.
Birthstones: Garnet, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Ruby, Peridot, Sapphire, Opal, Topaz, Turquoise. The modern list is largely a 1912 marketing invention by the American National Association of Jewelers. Enjoy your February amethyst regardless.
Age difference calculations (couples, siblings, historical figures)
One thing our calculator lets you do — via the age difference page — is compute the gap between two dates of birth. It sounds simple, and it usually is, but there are edge cases where the naive answer is off by a year.
Say Person A was born on July 3rd, 1990 and Person B on November 20th, 1992. If you just subtract years, you get 2. But if you subtract carefully, you get 2 years, 4 months, and 17 days — because November 20th, 1992 is more than two years after July 3rd, 1990. This matters when the difference is close to a round number: a couple "three years apart" might be 2y 11m or 3y 3m, and the emotional weight can feel very different.
Historical age gaps are fun to check. Anne Frank and Martin Luther King Jr. were both born in 1929, roughly seven months apart. Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the exact same day — February 12, 1809. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were born eight months apart. These pairings are the kind of thing that makes history teachers happy.
The birthday paradox (23 people, 50% chance of a shared birthday)
Here's a good bar-bet you can win: in a room of 23 randomly chosen people, there's better than a 50% chance that two of them share a birthday. Most people guess you'd need something like 180 people for even odds. The math says 23.
The reason it feels wrong is that most people count pairs against themselves instead of against every other person in the room. In a room of 23, the number of possible pairs is 23 × 22 / 2 = 253. Each pair has a 1-in-365 chance of matching. The probability that no pair matches drops fast as the number of pairs grows. At 23 people, the "no match" probability drops below 50%, which means the "at least one match" probability crosses above 50%.
At 40 people, you're at about 89%. At 70 people, over 99.9%. It's one of the most cited counterintuitive results in probability, and it holds up in real classrooms and offices — try it.
Time zones and the "born on the international date line" edge case
Age gets weird right around the international date line. If you're born at 11:59 PM on December 31st in Tokyo and someone else is born at 12:01 AM on January 1st in Los Angeles, you were born about 20 hours apart — but on paper, they're a year younger than you. Every legal system I know of uses the local date on your birth certificate, which means quirks like this stick.
There's a specific edge case worth flagging: American Samoa (UTC-11) and Samoa (UTC+13) are about 26 miles apart geographically but 24 hours apart on the calendar. A baby born in one and a baby born in the other, at the same physical moment, will have birth certificates dated a day apart. Our calculator doesn't adjust for this — it uses whatever date you type in — but if you're one of those unusual cases, be aware.
Similarly, if you were born during a daylight-saving transition, your birth time might be recorded in a way that skips or repeats an hour. Doesn't affect your age in days or years, but it can matter to a very precise obstetrics record.
Cultural age (Korean age, East Asian traditional counting)
Until June 2023, South Korea officially used a different age system than the rest of the world. In Korean traditional age, you were considered 1 year old at birth (because your time in the womb counted as your first year) and gained a year every January 1st, not on your birthday. So a baby born in late December 2022 would be 1 at birth, then 2 on January 1st, 2023 — a week later.
This meant Koreans typically claimed to be one or two years older than their "international age" would suggest. A person born in June 1990 was 33 in Korean age at the start of 2023 (born in 1990, so already 1, plus 32 New Year's Days), but 32 or 33 in international age depending on whether it was before or after June.
In June 2023, South Korea legally unified everything to international age. Government documents, hospital records, contracts, and legal age of majority now all use chronological age. But traditional Korean age still gets used casually — asking someone their age at a dinner in Seoul, you might get the traditional answer without thinking.
Vietnam, Japan, and pre-modern China had similar systems. Japan moved to international age in 1902. Vietnam still uses traditional age culturally in some contexts. If you're Korean-American or Vietnamese-American and your grandmother tells you an age that seems off by two, this is probably why.
What your age actually tells you (spoiler: not much on its own)
Age is a bad predictor of almost anything on its own. Two 45-year-olds can be at wildly different points in their lives, health, careers, or fitness. Age tells you roughly when someone was born, and that's essentially it.
It correlates with things, of course — accumulated experience, likelihood of certain diseases, probability of having kids, savings, whatever — but the correlation is weak. Better predictors of most life outcomes include income, education, exercise habits, sleep quality, social connection, and whether you have hobbies that require effort. Age barely moves the needle once you adjust for those.
So enjoy the number. Play with the calculator. Find out what day of the week you were born (mine was a Tuesday, which apparently means something to some people). But don't confuse the size of the number with any particular truth about who you are.
FAQ
What's the correct way to calculate someone's exact age?
Walk year-by-year, then month-by-month, then day-by-day. Start with the years between the two dates, then subtract months, then days — borrowing from the next-larger unit when a subtraction goes negative. The result is expressed as years, months, and days. Most calculators (including ours) do this in the background so you just see the answer.
Why does my age in different apps sometimes disagree?
Two reasons. First, some apps round to the nearest year, others floor it, others show years-and-months. Second, some apps use whole calendar years (so on your birthday your age flips instantly) while others use elapsed years (which introduces sub-day differences from time zones). Ours does the whole-calendar-year version — the standard.
What's the difference between chronological and biological age?
Chronological age is how long you've been alive on the calendar — 40 years and change, whatever. Biological age is a newer concept: an attempt to estimate how well your body has actually aged, using markers like telomere length, DNA methylation (epigenetic clocks), grip strength, or VO2max. They can differ by 10+ years in either direction, and biological age responds to lifestyle in a way chronological age doesn't.
Is Korean age still a real thing?
Not officially, no. South Korea moved to international-standard age in June 2023 for all legal and administrative purposes. Traditional Korean age (where you're 1 at birth and gain a year every January 1st) is still used informally and in some cultural contexts, but paperwork, medical records, and legal age of majority now use chronological age.
How does the birthday paradox work?
In a room of 23 people, the probability that two of them share a birthday is over 50%. It feels wrong because there are 365 possible birthdays, but the paradox counts pairs — 23 people means 253 possible pairs, and the probability that no pair shares a birthday shrinks fast. At 70 people, the probability of a match is over 99.9%.
What's the oldest verified human age?
Jeanne Calment (France, 1875–1997) lived to 122 years and 164 days. That's 44,724 days. Nobody has verifiably crossed 45,000 days. The runner-up, Sarah Knauss (USA), lived to 119 years and 97 days. Most 'people alive today' supercentenarian claims fall apart under scrutiny.
Does the calculator handle leap years correctly?
Yes. It uses JavaScript's built-in Date object, which handles the full Gregorian leap-year rules — every 4 years, except every 100 years, except every 400 years. So 2000 was a leap year, 1900 wasn't, 2100 won't be. February 29th birthdays are treated as March 1st in non-leap years, following the most common legal convention.
